This unit marks the first unit where video lessons are used instead of reading and studying theoretical materials. The unit provides two different videos where the same lesson is being taught twice to a group of students. In the first video, the students are struggling to grasp the grammar lesson, which can be explained by looking at the teacher’s teaching style and the lesson structure, which are both not ideal. For instance, the teacher never explains the point of the lesson and continuously confuses students by not clarifying the purpose of the exercises and activities.
In the second video, the teacher uses a different teaching style, where he is able to actively engage all students and effectively teach them the lesson. He clearly explains all the different exercises and activities to students and creates an environment where students are keen to participate actively.
This unit was very different from the material this course has covered so far, since it required me to watch two different videos. Seeing the ESA methods applied in real life, both in an efficient and in a less efficient manner, has given me more insight into how to teach effectively and how to engage students.
