In this unit, I have studied different learning and developmental theories, the different ways of configuring the layout of the classroom to best suit different activities, the different roles that a teacher may take on in the classroom, and how the maturation of students affects which activities are best suited to their learning. There are four broad categories that can be used to encompass learning and behavior theories: constructivist, maturationist, environmentalist, and other theories. Maturation theory asserts that every person undergoes a natural process of maturation that takes place in the same sequence regardless of other factors such as environment, while environmental theory asserts that development is not predetermined but instead variable depending on environment. Constructivism can be described as combing both maturation and environmental theory, and asserts that the way in which we interact with our environments is what determines our development. The configuration of the classroom environment may be changed in order to facilitate more/less student interaction, make the layout more suitable for board work, allow the teacher to easily view and access all students, and many other factors. In example, while configurations such as the traditional rows of seats may allow the teacher to view and police all students, make board work easy to see, and limit unwanted student interaction, a circular configuration would be more amenable to encouraging eye contact and interaction between all students. The teacher's role in the classroom will vary depending on the needs of her/his students, and may necessitate acting as an instructor, policeman, counselor, facilitator, psychologist, and mentor at different intervals. Furthermore, as students age their likes, dislikes, and abilities change in such a way that different activities become more or less suited to them. Because of this, it is important for the teacher to ensure that activities are customized to the strengths and general interests of the students' age range in order to ensure their motivation and ability to complete classroom tasks.
