Unit 13 was all about teaching pronunciation and phonology. It started off by explaining pronunciation then gave a definition of phonology. Intonation was then explained, including the normal patterns and others used in regular conversations. Techniques for indicating and teaching intonation included; nonsense words, by gesture, humming or singing, and the board. Stress was then discussed in great detail, including the rules for determining what word or syllable should have stress in a sentence. Lack of stress was also discussed. Techniques for indicating and teaching stress included; contrastive stress, by gesture, choral work, the board and stress marks. Sound joining and linked speech were then discussed. The phonemic alphabet was explained as well as phonemic symbols. Articulation including the speech organs, place of articulation, and manner of articulation were also discussed. Techniques for the pronunciation of individual sounds were explained. When to teach pronunciation was also covered.
