This unit focuses on common problem situations that EFL teachers are likely to encounter in a classroom, as well as suggested ways of dealing with them. One of the situations is new class members, which can be divided into two groups, namely, New group and Existing group. Whatever the group may be, it is important for the teacher to establish rapport. Another problem a teacher might face is a difference in levels among the students. It is suggested that the teacher can divide the group into stronger students and weaker students, have them carry out different activities, or have the same activity but different tasks for the class. Additionally, it is advised to not do anything, but have the students find out their levels for themselves, or pair stronger students with weaker ones. Other situations that a teacher may encounter include large classes, use of native language (by students), reluctant students and difficulties with listening texts. Whatever the situation, it is important to apply appropriate techniques in dealing with these situations, as described in previous units.
