I learned about effective classroom management strategies. These range from things I'm very comfortable with (voice projection and clarity) to things I'm alright with (eye contact, increasing student talk time, class groupings and seating arrangements), to things I definitely need to work on a bit more (enforcing discipline). One part of this unit that resonated with me particularly was that when disciplining, you should never make threats that you cannot carry out. It's very true that things like can decrease legitimacy, as well as losing your temper and shouting (things which I don't do so much, but it can happen at a certain point I suppose). I also liked the idea that when giving instructions, ask students to explain it back to you, rather than asking "do you understand". I have definitely done this before and I agree the recommended strategy sounds much more effective. Knowing how to intervene with problem behavior is always tricky because of the school rules and cultural differences, but this unit still provides some reasonable ideas.
