I learned about how confusing pronunciation and phonetics can be for a native speaker, let alone a foreign language student. When I have taught pronunciation in the past, I have often used tongue twisters and drilling principally, but this lesson has shown me that there all sorts of ways these skills can be taught and practiced. Most interestingly, perhaps, is the phonetic alphabet, which allows a more logical approach to pronunciation than simple roman characters, as two English words which are spelled the same way often have different pronunciations. However, I struggled with the phonetic exercises from this unit because they used British English pronunciation, which I found to be difficult to adapt to. I also learned about intonation which can be confusing but it's logical and stress, which I imagine would be easier to explain although it's something that I seem to struggle with personally. All in all, this was the most confusing and difficult unit for me, but I've learned a lot and I will try to deepen my understanding of these issues on my own time.
