This unit focuses on receptive skills, and how we process those skills in order to understand words and information. Unit 11 describes not only how we read and listen but also how to avoid problems that may arise in the learning of a language. By pre-teaching vocabulary in order to prepare the students before a reading or listening activity it is possible to avoid such problems. Same goes with properly selected texts so the students can learn all while gaining confidence, and also choosing topics that will interest them and keep them motivated to learn. As long as the material is varied and an interest to the students, the lessons will be successful in aiding them to develop their receptive skills.
After having read and studied this unit, I have learned the role of learning and listening in the understanding of a language. The complexity of how a learner understands context is immense and so are the difficulties that can arise when learning. This unit demonstrates how to avoid problems and how to teach students in order for them to learn without being frustrated or losing motivation.
