Can I get a TEFL job in Hong Kong via the NET Scheme?

The NET (Native-speaking English Teachers) Scheme is a recruitment program for foriegn teachers run by the Hong Kong Education Bureau. The scheme places qualified English language teachers from all over the world into the state school system. The scheme recruits hundreds of teachers every year to work in schools at both primary and secondary level. What do I need to apply for the NET Scheme?

To apply for the scheme you need to be a native or near native English speaker who is willing to commit to a two year contract that starts in early August. Teachers of all ages can apply, although there is a mandatory retirement age of 60 years old in Hong Kong which means anyone over 58 at the time of applying will be turned down.

What type of positions are available through the NET Scheme?

There are two parts to the NET scheme, one for primary level teachers known as PNET and one for secondary level teachers known as SNET. Applicants to the PNET scheme work with young learners aged from six to twelve, with class sizes ranging between 30 and 37. To be eligible you will need to have a degree in English, a qualification in primary education, and TEFL certification. If the scheme fails to reach its required quota of teachers, those with lesser qualifications will be considered.

Applicants to the SNET scheme work with older students, with class sizes ranging from 40 to 45. To be eligible you will need to have a degree in English or education, a post-graduate diploma in education, a TEFL diploma, and a minimum of one year of teaching experience. What benefits does the NET Scheme offer?

Participants on the NET Scheme receive a monthly salary of between HKD 25,000 and 60,000 (currently $3,200 to $7,700 US). Your exact income will be based on your previous teaching experience. As well as a generous basic salary, you can also expect to receive a benefit package that includes:
