TEFL in Phuket | TEFL Thailand | ITTT

Phuket is a fantastic tropical paradise. Nestled in the crystal clear, relaxing waters off the south-west coast of Thailand, Phuket (pronounced, “Poo-ket”) has rightfully earned the name, “Pearl of the Andaman Sea”.

Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and offers a wide variety of things to see and do. The island’s cities are safe and offer modern technology. Its famous nightlife is surrounded by quiet countryside, rolling mountains, lush jungle, historic temples and gentle waterfalls. Even the well-traveled know it’s difficult to find so many offerings on one island.

Phuket’s breath-taking beaches also offer similar variety. Famous, Patong Beach bustles with activity year-round, yet the Zen-like beaches of Mai Khao and Layan remain sublimely sparse through high season.

Even Phuket’s beaches are surrounded by beaches. There are dozens of tiny islands off Phuket that can be reached easily and affordably. Many remain unknown but an island like Koh Phi Phi has served as the backdrop for Leonardo DiCaprio’s “The Beach”, while James Bond Island hosted filming for Roger Moore and “The Man with the Golden Gun”. Famous or not, these islands should not be missed.

The TEFL course in Phuket offers you plenty of time to experience the most exciting nightlife found anywhere outside of Bangkok. Nowhere else can a Thai city boast such a wide variety of entertainment and cuisine options.

Even if you’re not into nightlife, you’ll never be bored on Phuket. Water sport options vary from snorkeling and scuba diving to kayaking and wind surfing. Land lovers will find horseback riding, jungle trekking and hiking, and elephant rides as well as ATV excursions. Modern movie theaters, world-class shopping and much more, all combined to ensure you have the time of your life while taking our course in Phuket.

The School

Our TEFL training center in Phuket is perfectly situated near the heart of the island’s main hub, Phuket Town. The area has plenty of bars and restaurants, as well as internet cafes, local shops, fresh food markets and all the other amenities you will need during your stay. With just a five-minute taxi ride, you will find yourself at Central Festival - Phuket’s largest modern shopping center, while also close by is a large weekend market. The weekend market provides a fantastic opportunity to get a feel for the local way of life, as well as the chance to barter for a wide range of goods including clothing, local handicrafts, handbags, sunglasses, jewellery and countless other items. The market is also a great place to sample the local food or simply hangout and people watch.

The center is based in a modern development and is spread over three floors. Our facility includes two levels of classrooms, an extensive library of resources and teaching materials, a kitchenette, as well as a balcony overlooking the surrounding area. The building is comfortably furnished, with air-conditioning and Wi-Fi internet throughout.

Centrally located on the island and only moments away from world-class beaches, Phuket Town is where east meets west. From its famous Sino-Portuguese architecture and traditional temples, to its modern bars and restaurants, Phuket Town offers both history and development. While Phuket’s main beach resort of Patong receives most of the island’s tourists, Phuket Town will never let you forget you are in Thailand.

While there are no deadlines for a deposit, courses can fill up quickly and your seat will only be reserved after the deposit has been paid.

The balance of course fees is payable on the first day of class and can be made with a credit/debit card, cash or traveler’s check.

Fees are all-inclusive so you won’t be asked to pay additional costs for course related materials or services. This also includes course moderation and accreditation fees, airport transfers for qualifying arrivals, lifetime job assistance, a welcome dinner and daily refreshments.

  • What travel documents will I need for thailand?

    Expand

It is advised that you enter Thailand on a 60 day Tourist Visa. Applications are cheap and turnaround times are fairly quick. You need to apply for a tourist visa with your nearest Thai embassy. Note that 15-day or 30-day stamps can only be extended by a maximum of seven days without leaving Thailand. Alternatively, some nationals can enter the Kingdom and obtain permission to stay in Thailand for 30 days (by air) or 15 days (over land) upon arrival.*

If you are from a country where visa procedures require a course invitation letter, one will be made available to you immediately after your intent to attend the course has been proven via your deposit payment.

    * As this information is subject to change at any time, we advise you to contact your local consulate for current travel regulations prior to planning your trip. For more information on obtaining visas please check with your local Thai consulate or embassy.

  • What is the course schedule?

    Expand

From Monday to Friday, class begins at either 9:00 a.m. or 9:30 a.m. Lunch is taken between 12:30 p.m. and 1:25 p.m. On days that you conduct your teaching practice you will plan your lesson between 1:25 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. and then deliver the lesson in the late afternoon or early evening. These lessons are followed by immediate feedback from the instructors. Friday classes are generally until 12:30 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. and you will have your weekends free.

  • What can I expect during teaching practice?

    Expand

Lessons are delivered to students aged 16 years and older. The vast majority of students are Thai but other nationalities do attend some classes. Class size varies from one-to-one lessons up to 16 students. Lessons are based upon real teaching resources found all over the world and you will have the chance to create your own materials as well. You will receive the aid of your course trainer throughout lesson planning and receive immediate feedback on your lesson after it’s been delivered. Practicum is assessed and a satisfactory assessment is required to earn your TEFL/TESOL certificate.

  • Who usually attends the course?

    Expand

We average 24 trainees on each course. The majority of trainees are British or American, while many others come from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, South Africa and the Philippines. Occasionally, we do get fluent non-native English speakers from Western Europe, Scandinavia, India, China, Thailand, etc. Trainees must be 18 years of age or older and the age range varies greatly depending on the course.

  • Is there a dress code?

    Expand

During trainees’ lessons, casual attire is allowed. Thailand can get rather hot so this means sandals, shorts, t-shirts and other loose-fitting clothing, cotton attire is best. During teaching practice, you will need to dress in trousers/skirts and closed-toe shoes. Men need collared shirts, while women need to wear conservative tops that cover their shoulders. Men also need to shave or keep facial hair neatly trimmed. No visible tattoos or facial piercings are allowed while teaching local students.

  • What should I bring for course studies?

    Expand

Please be sure to arrive on the first day of the course with a notebook and a pen. We also encourage you to bring a laptop as we have Wi-Fi at the training center. We will provide all course materials for you so there is no need to bring anything else for the course itself.

  • What documents do I need for finding employment after the course?

    Expand

If you plan to work in Thailand without returning home before you do so, you will need to bring your original degree (if you have one) and any other teaching qualifications that you might have. While not required by all schools, it is advisable to obtain a local criminal background check and sealed university transcripts as some schools will want to see one, or both of these documents.

  • Do I need a degree to teach in thailand?

    Expand

The short answer is no. Thailand’s Ministry of Education (MoE) does require foreign teachers to have degrees, but not all schools fall under the MoE’s jurisdiction. Primary and secondary schools, both public and private, will require degrees as your teacher’s license will need to be approved by the MoE. However, university and corporate work will not require a degree. Teaching in one of Thailand’s thousands of language schools also does not necessarily require a degree. So while some sources fail to truly explore this issue and say degrees are required, you can rest assured, they are not required for all teaching positions around the Kingdom.
