Teaching English is probably the best way for people to earn a living through a rewarding career while experiencing a plethora of different cultures, lifestyles, traditions and languages. Teachers come from a variety of nations and backgrounds. The basic requirements for teaching EFL are fluency in English and certification to teach from an internationally accredited TESOL or TEFL certificate provider, such as ITTT and TEFL International.
Recognized TEFL Programs
ExpandThe entry-level qualification needed to start your rewarding new profession is a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). The terms are synonymous, interchangeable and universal. Our courses can be taken online, at one of our centers around the world or even through a combination of both methods.
Is teaching English overseas for me?
ExpandThere are literally thousands of positions available throughout the world, so no matter your preference for Europe or Asia, big cities or small towns, young learners or adults, you're bound to find a job that suitable for you. Once settled in, you're bound to meet wonderful locals as well as colleagues.
Some of the more popular destinations for TEFL/TESOL teaching are Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Spain, Italy, the Czech Republic, the UK, Mexico, Argentina, Costa Rica and many more. If you're looking to live and work in a particular country, teaching English is a great, sometimes the only, way to achieve your goal.
Taking a certification course will do so much you personally and professionally. The training will help boost your confidence, improve your ability to present information and expose you to up-to-date teaching techniques. ITTT and TEFL International offer one of the widest selections of accredited TEFL and TESOL courses anywhere in the world. All courses adhere to strict international guidelines in order to become accredited and we also have our own strict codes of ethical conduct.
Teaching English is a wonderful way to travel the world and immerse yourself in new cultures. However, it's important to note that you will enter into a profession where people's future depends on your professionalism and reliability.
After only two years overseas, you'll have built up a good amount of versatility and effectiveness as an EFL/ESL teacher. At that stage you might wish to build upon your experience and skills by enrolling in advanced qualification courses. These qualifications will help you land senior positions and higher salaries.
TEFL Course and Training Options
ExpandA good entry level TEFL course will give you a sound knowledge of English grammar and how to teach effectively to language students at different stages of the language learning process, from beginner to advanced. These skills can be gained through online courses as well as in-class courses or a combination of both.
Online TEFL Courses
ExpandInitial training programs are offered online. Some of these programs are very good, such as courses offered by www.teflcorp.com and www.teflonline.net . Others fall short of truly preparing you to teach with efficiency and effectiveness. If you're interested in online courses, look for one that includes at least 100 hours of training and is guided by a tutor. The tutor will help you to gain a better understanding of the material and motivate you through the course. Please note that online courses cannot offer observed teaching practice and that is what many employers are looking for in a certificate course. If you don't have experience in the classroom, you might want to consider an in-class course or combined course.
Combined TEFL Programs
ExpandYou can also take a combined course. This brings together an online and classroom format of training. The theory and language awareness will be studied online, at your own pace and in the comfort of your chosen learning space. Once that is complete, you'll then attend a combined course center for less than two weeks to conduct observed teaching practice. This is a great option for those who cannot get away from their normal responsibilities for four weeks.
