TEFL Jobs Japan

Prospects for securing a TEFL job in Japan are very good for persons holding a TEFL certificate from TEFL International. In Osaka and Tokyo there are generally more TEFL jobs than there are teachers to fill them.

Elsewhere in the country the prospects for TEFL employment remain good as well. Japanese society in general has a high respect for teachers, and the students are usually highly motivated and eager to learn.

Japan TEFL Job Requirements

A bachelor’s degree is necessary in order to secure a work permit, so you have to be a graduate in order to get a TEFL job in Japan. An energetic personality and a good sense of humor in a teacher are highly sought after by schools here. Teacher’s salaries are high in Japan, and many teachers find they are able to save as much as 70,000 Yen each month, depending on lifestyle, of course. Lots of teachers also supplement their income by taking on private students.

Types of TEFL Jobs in Japan

Large corporations often hire a large number of teachers. There are also a very great number of private language schools in Japan. It is advisable to research the institution you are considering accepting a position from. There are several online communities of English teachers who may be able to give you feedback in this regard.

Make sure that you ask questions regarding salary or hourly pay rate, whether you’ll have to travel to your lessons and if you get compensated for this time and reimbursed for expenses, what kind of material resources the school has for lesson planning and teaching materials, what kind of administrative and collegial support you will have, whether a visa will be needed and if the school assists with that, is housing or a housing allowance provided, etc. This will help to avoid any nasty surprises after you’ve already agreed to take the job.
