There are many private language schools offering opportunities for TEFL jobs in Greece. These language schools are where the great majority of English teachers can find work in this country.

Most TEFL jobs in Greece are teaching young learners, but there are opportunities for work in almost all other areas as well, such as business English, teaching adults and private lessons.

Salaries in Greece will seem to be quite low, but this is offset by the low cost of living here, and are, therefore, more than enough to get by on. If you have a university degree, a TEFL certificate and an EU passport, then you should be able to find work without too much problem. For nationalities outside of the EU, regulations made finding work in Greece more difficult.

Finding a TEFL Job in Greece

It’s best to thoroughly research the work situation in Greece before you come, and maybe even get a TEFL job lined up as well. All language schools in Greece are organized and regulated through a single association of school owners known as PALSO.

They will be able to tell you about job openings available and will even forward your resume to schools in need of teachers. English teaching jobs are frequently advertised on the internet and in newspapers. Most positions come available between the months of August to October.

If you haven’t secured a position before coming to Greece, this period is a good time to go in person to language schools with your up to date resume and dressed in your professional best and ask to speak to the human resources manager or the director.

TEFL Job Requirements

Once you are in the country, you will need a work permit, a residence permit and a teaching permit to teach legally. It takes time to get through this process, and the school where you will be working needs to do part of this process for you.

Working Conditions

Salary and working conditions will vary from school to school. Make sure that you ask questions before accepting a job regarding salary or hourly pay rate, whether you’ll have to travel to your lessons and if you get compensated for this time and reimbursed for expenses, what kind of material resources the school has for lesson planning and teaching materials, what kind of administrative and collegial support you will have, etc. This will help to avoid any nasty surprises after you’ve already agreed to take the job.

Many English teachers supplement their income by offering private lessons. Many private students are preparing for one of the University of Cambridge ESOL exams, which is the most respected and widely recognized of the English competency exams in Greece.
